Birthday: 9/22/1947
Years running at the time of profile(2003): about 13
Occupation: President and CEO of Apogee Holdings
How many miles a week do you run? Right now, about 20-25, trying to get the miles up for Houston '04.
How did you come to join Bayou City?: I moved into a house I built at 1804 Bolsover... it was a block from Rice Entrance #13, and was so convenient that I joined (1984). Didn't get active until 1995.
My proudest running accomplishment is: The 10 for Texas in 1996 at a 7:23 pace. Don't know what got into me.
My favorite training run is: Any run when it's nice and cool, I'm in decent shape and the endorphins kick in.
My favorite race is: See above. 10 for Texas. Since that race is gone, I'd say the Houston Marathon, because it's here and convenient and when the weather's great, it's the best.
My best distance is: 10 miles.
I run because: I like to eat and drink and I feel better. (Plus I have too many slacks that I wouldn't be able to fit in if I didn't...)
My philosophy for life is: Take it as it comes and enjoy!
My next goal is: Is this a running goal? That's easy: the Houston Marathon. I've run for Team in Training in the past, but this year(04) I'm going to run for prostate cancer research.
Favorite training food: Beans and tortillas.
When I'm running I think about: Cheryl and the rest of my family, business, watching my step.
The best running advice I could give would be: Take it easy and have fun.
People would be surprised if they knew I: Play jazz piano.
The top thing on my dream list is: To live for a month in Italy.
If I could have been anything, besides my current occupation it would be: Can't think of a thing I'd rather be doing than what I'm doing right now.
Other hobbies besides running: Cooking; FISHING with my fishing buddies, number one is John Koenig.
I would love to spend the day with: All my family together.
The most profound thing that has happened in my life is: Marrying Cheryl Verlander.
