---- HANK KASTNER ----

Name: Hank Kastner

Age: 50 on 4/22/01

Years running at time of profile(2001): 24

Occupation: HR consultant

How many miles a week do you run? 25-40

How did you come to join Bayou City?: I have been a long time participant and observer in the Houston running community. When I had the time for running socially and not just running, there was no question of where to turn.

My proudest running accomplishment is: I have run regularly for all of those 24 years, with peaks and valleys, minimal injuries, some great experiences and some good sharp races.

My favorite training run is: A good trail run - for a routine in Houston, that means Allen Parkway. But the best have been on back country trails, in many states, when I get the chance.

My favorite race is: The one that intersects with a training peak and good cold weather, at the same time.

My best distance is: Anything 5K to 20K

I run because: Running........... makes me feel most alive, ......let's me succeed or fail based on my own efforts, ........keeps me feeling young, strong and healthy, .......keeps me in touch with good people, ........prevents me from going crazy, ...........is a constant, steadying force in whatever chaos life is at the time, etc...........

My philosophy for life is: This above all: to thine own self be true; And it must follow, as the night the day; Thou canst not then be false to any man. William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616), 'Hamlet,' Act I, Scene iii. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Reinhold Niebuhr. Now bid me run, and I will strive with things impossible.
William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616), 'Julius Caesar'

My next goal is: Fresh PR's in a new age group!! It would be great if I could kick some butt too, but I may settle for qualifying for Boston in '02.

Favorite training food: A good, carefully crafted micro-brew ale, and things that go well with it - just about anything Mexican, or pizza.

When I'm running I think about: How great it is to not have to be thinking about anything! - seriously, I enjoy getting away from whatever the day's issues or concerns may be, and just focus on the conversation and companions at hand, or the sheer physical performance, or random thoughts, or the rewarding after-run plans.

The best running advice I could give would be: Listen to the coach, not your ego. Plan for the long-run, don't sacrifice for the moment. If it hurts, rest it. If it's just uncomfortable, push the limits.

The top thing on my dream list is: Spend a whole summer following the track circuit in Europe...and Follow the entire Tour de France...and Taste every beer available in Belgium...and Hike the Appalachian trail...and Hike the Pacific Coast trail...and then decide what to do next.

If I could have been anything, besides my current occupation it would be: An engineer and a high school cross country coach

Other hobbies besides running: Tinkering with 30 acres of woods and pasture in central Texas.

The most profound thing that has happened in my life is: Julie
