---- SORRELL WARREN ----

Name: Sorrell Warren

Birthday: 9/9/53

Years running at the time of profile(2000): Sprinter in high school. Distance running for five years.

Occupation: I sell educational software to colleges.

How many miles a week do you run? Less than 20 now. About 40 when training for a marathon.

How did you come to join Bayou City?: Suzanne Hegemier invited me and I haven't seen her since I joined.

My favorite training run is: Around Memorial Park. I always see someone I know.

My favorite race is: Honolulu Marathon. The race is fun but the recovery is great.

My best distance is: Still looking for it.

My proudest running accomplishment is: While running an incredibly stupid positive split in my first marathon, I had nothing left and had decided to quit at mile 21 when I met my cheering section again. As I approached and saw my then 10 year son, Stephen, I knew that I could not quit in front of him. So I continued, mostly walking, and finished in 5:52. Even though I've run five other marathons in much faster times, if I had stopped that day I probably would not be running now. That experience has also helped me through other little non running obstacles in life. Hopefully Stephen learned something too.

I run because: After seeing three friends run the 94 Houston Marathon, I thought "If they could do it, so could I" so I started training for 95. After realizing I'm never going to be fast, I now run because it's a fun way to stay in shape with friends.

My philosophy for life is: Carpe Diem

My next goal is: Loose the 25 pounds I've gained since the 98 Houston Marathon and run the New York Marathon in November.

The top thing on my dream list is: To learn to play the piano.

Other hobbies besides running: Golf, Sailing, Photography, Travel, Politics, Aerobics,Country Western & Whip Dancing, Theater, Triathalons??, Yoga, Board Games, Trivia, Spending time with friends

I would love to spend the day with: George Bush while President. (Past or Future)

Favorite food: Sushi

People would be surprised if they knew I: saw President Bush running around Memorial Park about three years ago and ran with and talked to him for about a half mile.

The most embarrassing thing that has happened to me is: While sitting in a restaurant telling a group of friends an embarrassing story about a mutual friend that we had not seen in 10 years, the subject of the story appeared at our table. She had just walked in, saw us and walked over to say hello. I'm not sure how much she heard.

When I'm running I think about: I try to run with someone so that I can have a conversation and not have to think. When running alone, I start to think about running and it's no longer fun.

The best running advice I could give would be: I'm much too slow to give running advice to anyone.

The most profound thing that has happened in my life is: I realized in my late twenties that my parents that I had never been close to had given me a very solid foundation and a strong sense of right and wrong. I have tried to use some of the same principles with my fifteen year old son and so far he is a great kid.
